The Transgender Introductory Primer is ideal for a variety of professionals in the helping and health professions, particularly mental health, social service and medical providers. During this training, participants will learn basic terminology and theory, how to ask for pronouns, health disparities facing the transgender community, resiliency factors, gender transition paths and support needs, and targeted best practices. Providers will have an opportunity following the training to list themselves in MaineTransNet's community health database.

  • As the Executive Director of Maine TransNet, Quinn’s work ranges from community building initiatives, expanding health equity and access across the state, suicide prevention, policy advocacy, and violence prevention. Before MTN, Quinn worked in a variety of community organizing settings, including at the Health Equity Alliance managing a rural HIV testing program and building rural LGBTQ+ communities, and with the Maine People’s Alliance working on economic and health justice issues. Throughout her work, Quinn believes in centering the wellness of marginalized communities, and that the root of power and liberation can be found in communities that embrace their diversity and interdependence. She lives with her husband Ezra and their dog Zoe in Auburn, Maine.

About this Webinar

Fragility is a term often used to describe countries that are emerging from conflict. The United States, assessed in 2018 to be the country most able to deal with a disaster, has tragically performed the worst of any industrialized country in the COVID pandemic. The speaker will discuss the possible roles and specify policy options for health professionals that can address American fragility. Without public health there will be no public trust. Without public trust, American fragility will not only continue but it will worsen.

    Noah Nesin, MD

  • Dr. Noah Nesin has been a family doctor in Maine since 1986, first in a private, solo practice and then in FQHCs (Health Access Network in Lincoln and Penobscot Community Health Care, based in Bangor. Dr. Nesin was raised in Howland, Maine, where his father was a family doctor for 39 years. He attended Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine residency in Duluth, Minnesota. Throughout his career Dr. Nesin has led efforts in evidence based prescribing and in practice transformation to improve efficiency and to use health care resources judiciously. Dr. Nesin has mentored PA, nurse practitioner and medical students, and Family Practice residents throughout his career Dr. Nesin serves as the chair of Maine’s Academic Detailing Advisory Committee, the body which oversees the Maine Independent Clinical Information Service, sits on the Advisory Committee for the Lunder Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine, and on the Community Advisory Committee for Maine Health Access Foundation. He was a co-founder of Maine Quality Counts’ Maine Chronic Pain Collaborative, is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Ambulatory Care Management, and is a member of AHRQ’s National Integration Advisory Council, which is currently focused on treatment of substance use disorders across the country. Dr. Nesin is also a member of Maine’s Opioid Clinical Advisory Group and Maine’s Governor has appointed him chair of the newly formed Maine Prescription Drug Affordability Board and also appointed him as a member of Maine’s Board of Licensure in Medicine. Dr. Nesin is the current President of the Maine Public Health Association and published a number of papers and opinion pieces related to primary care.

    Norbert Goldfield, MD

  • Norbert is founder/ CEO of Healing Across the Divides (www.healingdivides.org; HATD), focusing on peace-building through health in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The mission of this organization is to measurably improve the health of marginalized Israelis and Palestinians through community-based interventions. Norbert Goldfield MD is also founder/ CEO of a bipartisan venture incorporated in April 2018, Ask Nurses and Doctors or AND (www.asknursesdoctors.com). The mission of AND is to organize and then link local health professionals with competitive national political candidates who have practical plans for universal quality affordable health coverage for all Americans. Dr. Goldfield has published more than 100 books and articles. His latest book is Peace Building through Women’s Health: Psychoanalytic, Sociopsychological, and Community Perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (Routledge, Taylor Francis, 2021). He is also a practicing internist at a community health center. Dr. Goldfield has served on a number of local (e.g. Congregation B’Nai Israel; Health Care for All) and national boards (e.g. Bend the Arc). He has taught college courses on a variety of topics including Peace Building Through Health, and the Impact of AIDS on American cities. Prior to February 2018, Dr Goldfield worked for 30 years as medical director for a research group developing tools linking payment for health care services to improved health care outcomes. These tools are in use in many countries in addition to the U.S.

  • Dr. Matthew Murphy is Assistant Professor of Medicine and Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University. He lives in a bilingual and bicultural household where Spanish is the primary language of communication. His work has been supported by the World Health Organization, The Pan American Health Organization, the NIH, the CDC and the European Commission. He was a Fulbright Research Fellow in Morocco where he led research on the impact of the country’s National HIV Program. He completed the European Master’s of Public Health as an Erasmus Mundus Fellow at the Andalusian School of Public Health in Granada, Spain and France’s National School of Public Health in Rennes, France. He was also named a Yale/Stanford Global Health Scholar and worked in the Infectious Diseases Department of the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. Dr. Murphy has worked extensively in Latin America with Brown University collaborating sites, the Pan American Health Organization as well as non-governmental organizations. As the Medical Director of Open Door Health, an Initiative of the Rhode Island Public Health Institute, he oversaw the implementation of a community adapted COVID-19 testing program which was described in the CDC’s Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal. He also supported the COVID-19 response in the state’s correctional system co-authoring several related publications in the Lancet among other high impact journals.

  • Kerri Connolly is the Program Manager of the Food Access Division of the Rhode Island Public Health Institute and holds a secondary appointment as Project Director at the Center for Health Equity at Brown University School of Public Health. Kerri is responsible for both the big-­‐picture strategic vision and the day-­‐to-­‐day operations of a policy advocacy campaign to expand SNAP incentives into retail settings through the implementation of sugary drinks tax. She has her six-sigma green belt certification in project management and has 10 years of experience implementing community driven projects and programs. Kerri served in the Peace Corps in the Youth Development & Health Program and as a member of the Monitoring, Reporting & Evaluation Committee. Her strengths lie in developing measurable and sustainable community driven solutions, programs and policy initiatives to community identified public health concerns. Kerri has her BS in Nutrition from Simmons University and is currently pursuing her MPH at Brown University.

Will Robertson is an accomplished producer, Grammy-nominated engineer, and sought-after performer. Deepening Your Impact, Part II: Considerations When Choosing Voices and How to Use Relatable Language 

The goal of this webinar is to teach creators of online courses how to choose voices that will reflect and resonate with their participants, as well as how to communicate in straightforward language. This webinar combines the approaches of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion alongside Health Literacy to teach a framework for intentional decision-making about languages and voices.


Learning objectives

After completing the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Make intentional choices for voiceover selection by identifying the dimensions of diversity relevant for a given training.
  • Make intentional choices for voiceover roles by identifying potential assumptions and biases as well as characteristics of promising individuals.
  • Use a health literacy framework to adapt course language for intended participants.

  • McKenzie Wren launched Wren Consulting in 2015 and has served nearly 50 client-partners since then ranging from single sessions to multiyear relationships. McKenzie earned her master’s degree from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health where she also taught students on leadership and community engagement. She worked in Clarkston, GA, called “the most diverse square miles in the US,” for 10 years including serving as Executive Director at the Clarkston Community Center where she honed her facilitation skills. She has a background in storytelling and performance and is also trained in Asset-based Community Development and the Collaborative Operating System as well as drawing from the deep wisdom of the Presencing Institute and the Art of Hosting.

  • In 2018, Patrice founded Start2Soar, LLC whose purpose is to create a network of adults that are dedicated to becoming champions of youth. Start2Soar, LLC also works to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion within organizations and within communities. She coaches professionals and organizations to meet their impact goals with organizational sustainability in mind. As the recipient of the inaugural Leadership Award at the 2018 Georgia After-school and Youth Development due to her work in leading and progressing after-school services throughout Georgia. In 2018, Patrice also received a special Outstanding Service award from The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Area Command. Patrice currently serves as a Quality Coach for Georgia Statewide After-school Network, and facilitates training all over the country focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion . Throughout Patrice’s career she has been instrumental in supporting organizations and teams with implementing turnaround strategies that create substantive positive change for work teams and the communities they serve. She has several years of experience facilitating large and small scale conversations about shifting the culture of organizations to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Patrice believes that all organizations can mobilize to find their SOAR strategies for successful outcomes.

Deepening Your Impact

In a time with limited resources and limited attention spans, this 3-part webinar series is designed to help you deepen the impact of your self-paced trainings. In the first webinar, you’ll learn how to pare down the content of your trainings to focus on the skills your participants need most. In the second webinar, you’ll learn how to communicate in straightforward language and choose voices that will reflect and resonate with your participants. In the final webinar, you’ll learn how to record quality audio from home so you can maximize resources for your training.

You’ll learn a 4-question framework to use when creating online trainings. We’ll be discussing this framework as applied to the development of a recent online training for dental hygienists.

Dr. Ariela Freedman is an experienced trainer with over 20 years of experience in education and public health, including CDC, state and local public health departments, Head Start, camps and afterschool programs, nonprofits, and public schools. She also works with corporate clients and health care professionals, with a specific focus on empowering women. Ariela’s workshops are known for being interactive, creative, fun, and designed for immediate use. Ariela has a PhD in Behavioral Sciences and Health Education from Emory University and an MPH from the University of Minnesota. Ariela also has a Master of Arts in Teaching and a BA in English Literature. Ariela is the Owner and Founder of MavenTree Consulting and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Emory University. Ariela began her career as a high school English, Drama, and Debate teacher in Chicago. She later directed health programming at Head Start in Minneapolis, then served as an Assistant Professor in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.

An overview of health literacy will be discussed, as well as how it connects to health equity.     Jennifer Ceide, MPH

  • Jennifer Ceide has worked in the field of public health since 2009, with a strong emphasis on health education and communication. Her focus on developing educational programs for patients with Asthma afforded her the opportunity to present her work to clinicians of the Shanghai Children Medical Center in Shanghai, China. Her leadership in guiding the implementation of tobacco cessation systems at Jamaica Hospital led to the Gold Star Recognition in the NYC Tobacco-Free Hospital Campaign Certification from the New York City Department of Health. She currently serves as Primary Faculty for the Master of Public Health program at the University of New England in Maine. Jennifer recently developed a Health Education Design course that has been described as challenging, practical, and enjoyable by MPH students. Jennifer is Haitian-American and was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She attributes much of her success to being raised in a richly diverse community and obtaining both undergraduate and graduate degrees from institutions in Jamaica-Queens, NY and New Orleans, LA, two culturally-vibrant US cities.

  • Liz Scharnetzki

    Liz Scharnetzki, Ph.D.

  • Liz Scharnetzki, Ph.D., is a Staff Scientist at the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) at Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI). Dr. Scharnetzki completed her PhD in Experimental Social Psychology at the University of Vermont. Her research interests lie in understanding how stigma and identity threat impact the delivery and receipt of health care. Before joining CORE, Dr. Scharnetzki worked at Vermont’s Agency of Human Services, developing policy research projects aimed at promoting social capital within Vermont’s criminal justice system. Dr. Scharnetzki’s other prior positions include serving as a lecturer at universities and colleges in both California and Vermont, and working as a Research Technician at one of the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Initiative sites. Dr. Scharnetzki currently serves on the National Lung Cancer Roundtable Stigma Committee and co-leads MMCRI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workgroup.

    Leo Waterston, M.A.

  • Leo Waterston, M.A., is the Program Director for the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) at Maine Medical Center Research Institute, where he is responsible for the Center’s operations, strategic planning, and management of staff and resources to support CORE’s mission. Leo also serves as Project Director for the Maine Lung Cancer Coalition, a grant-funded lung cancer prevention and screening program with partners throughout the state of Maine. Leo has more than 15 years of experience working in health care research, management, and public health. He earned a B.A. in Psychology from Clark University and a M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Fordham University. He currently serves on the National Lung Cancer Roundtable and Maine's Impact Cancer Network.   • With a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, a Master of Public Policy and Management and as a Licensed Social Worker, Dr. Ouattara currently works as the State of Maine Refugee Health Coordinator. Dr. Ouattara has 21 years of experience working with refugees and immigrants in Africa and in the United States. In his current position, Dr. Ouattara oversees the domestic medical screening of refugees, asylees, and other ORR eligible populations in Maine. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Southern New Hampshire University teaching Sociocultural Perspective.

  • Andrew Solomon

    Andrew Solomon

  • Andrew P. Solomon, MPH, is the Senior Program Manager for the federally funded Northeast Telehealth Resource Center (www.NETRC.org), a member of the National Consortium of Telehealth Resource Centers and a project of Medical Care Development, Inc. (www.MCD.org). Andrew has worked with over 600 health care provider organizations, government agencies, and others to design, implement, and optimize telehealth programs. NETRC’s scope of services cover the “A to Z” of telehealth program development, including legal and regulatory considerations, quality and equity best practices, training resources, and sustainability. Andrew’s experiences also include developing and managing a population health program at a Community Health Center in Rhode Island. There, he implemented projects such as text-messaging programs to improve patient engagement and a transportation program to assist patients in getting to appointments and other health-related services. Andrew holds a Master of Public Health from Boston University.

    Kerri Barton

  • Kerri earned her MPH at Boston University School of Public Health in 2011. She has since worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health as an infectious disease epidemiologist, at Maine Medical Center as a Rural Research Navigator, and now works for the City of Portland Public Health Division as the Interim Program Coordinator for Harm Reduction Services in the Needle Exchange Program.

In February of 2020 Vermont began preparing for what became the COVID-19 pandemic. From the start, the Governor and the people supporting him, most notably the Commissioner at the Vermont Department of Health, relied on science and the data at hand to inform the public. During this session, you will learn the principles of effective marketing in public health and how Vermont applied the principles in its messaging.

  • Over the past 40 years, Rebecca has worked nationally and internationally in many areas of public health marketing and behavior change, including the Tobacco Control Programs for New York State and Vermont. She’s worked for the Ford Foundation, the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic, Planned Parenthood International Federation and Planned Parenthood Federation of America (where she was national Director of Social Marketing), and trained national grantees for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to embed behavior change into programs. Rebecca was on staff at VDH from 2012-2017, where she worked on the Medicaid Tobacco Benefit Expansion and Promotion Initiative and was a co-author on the subsequent article “A Framework for Effective Promotion of a Medicaid Tobacco Cessation Benefit,” published in Health Promotion Practice in July 2020. She has been on the editorial board for Social Marketing Quarterly since 2013. She currently holds a legislative appointment to the Vermont Substance Misuse Prevention Oversight and Advisory Council, which advises the Governor and legislature on policy for tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs. Her profile as a social marketer in public health will be the first inclusion of social marketing in the upcoming third edition of 101+ Careers In Public Health published by Columbia University.

  • Shari Levine has extensive professional experience in communications and in writing for various public and professional audiences. She has a demonstrated history of working in the health, wellness and fitness industry. Shari’s experience includes consulting with nonprofit organizations, use of program evaluation and also editing, journalism, and creative writing. She is known as a strong media and communication professional. Shari earned her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree focused on Health Education and Behavioral Sciences from Emory University. Presently, she is the Information Director for the Vermont Department of Health, Division of Maternal and Child Health. She has served on the VDH COVID 19 Crisis and Emergency Response (CERC) team over this past year, in which data, assessment, message design, and evaluation were used to inform Vermonters of the risks and the nature of COVID 19.

When looking at the disproportionate impact in health disparities on communities of color, the black community's experience can be an indicator of what is happening to all marginalized communities. It is possible that empathy is hard to have as a member of a less impacted community. If you don't see it and don't experience it, it seems you don't feel it.

Dr. Cooper received her BS in Justice Systems (with a minor in Business Administration) in 2009 and her MA in Criminology from the University of Florida in 2011. She received her Ph.D. in Criminology (with a minor in Organizational Leadership for Nonprofits) from the University of Florida in 2015.
    In addition to her work as a Professor and the Director of Research at UNH, she is also a Certified Prevention Professional who works with nonprofits and community organizations as a prevention trainer and evaluation consultant. Through her work in the community, she has collaborated with key stakeholders, such as youth and their parents, law enforcement, mental health professionals, and youth-serving organizations.

  • Karen DuBois-Walton currently serves as the President of the Elm City Communities/Housing Authority of the City of New Haven and President of The Glendower Group, LLC (the development affiliate of HANH) and 360 Management Group, Inc. (the property management affiliate) responsible for administrative, programmatic and policy direction of the public housing, housing choice voucher program, finance and planning, and development activities.
    Dr. DuBois-Walton resides in New Haven. She is actively involved in a number of non-profit boards dedicating time to creating greater equity for those who are marginalized. She leads efforts within New Haven and the Region to remove barriers to fair housing, reverse housing segregation patterns, and to invest in under-resourced communities.

    Linda K. Barry
  • Linda K. Barry, M.D., M.P.H., FACS is a board-certified liver and pancreas surgeon with a unique background in both clinical and basic science research. As an Associate Professor of Surgery, Dr. Barry practices and teaches at the University of Connecticut Medical School and holds the position of Director of the Office of Multicultural and Community. She previously served as Assistant Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Connecticut Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (CICATS) at the University of Connecticut, Co-Director for the CICATS Pilot Program for Collaborative Translational and Clinical Research, Director of the Young Innovative Investigator Program, and Director of the CICATS M1 Mentorship Program. Dr. Barry’s professional experience and life’s work has been in addressing health disparities in health care delivery and research.

  • Jennifer Crittenden, PhD, MSW

    Assistant Professor in the UMaine School of Social Work

  • Jennifer Crittenden, PhD, MSW is an assistant professor in the UMaine School of Social Work as well as the Associate Director of the University of Maine Center on Aging. Dr. Crittenden has over fifteen years of experience in professional and community education, program evaluation and program planning. Nearly all research projects and grant-funded programs under her management entail the translation of academic research into professional and public education programs, events, and dissemination activities. Her experience in healthcare research and evaluation includes a variety of initiatives aimed at prevention and quality improvement across the care spectrum. Dr. Crittenden is currently the evaluation co-lead for the statewide AgingME Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program. She is also co-PI for The Mayer-Rothschild Foundation Designation of Excellence in Person-Centered Long-Term Care Project, a project that is developing a national framework from which person-centered care can be defined and implemented in long-term care settings. Dr. Crittenden has also spearheaded a primary care elder abuse screening project, served as a consultant for an educational initiative focused on care transitions, and has served as a lead evaluator for two oral health initiatives implemented within primary care and long-term care settings.

  • Kellie Stanhope has worked for 36 years as a clinical dental hygienist, practicing in many settings, including private practice, Indian Health Services public health, and as a clinical instructor. She is a graduate of University of Maine, Orono and University of Maine Augusta-Bangor, and is currently employed at Northern Light Health as Program Coordinator, Child Health within the Community Health and Grants Department. She works directly with the Raising Readers and From the First Tooth Programs and is a Professional Clinical Teacher II in the Dental Health Programs at the University of Maine at Augusta-Bangor campus. She provides clinical instruction in the senior Dental Hygiene Clinic and is clinical lead for the Local Anesthesia and Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary labs.


  • Kalie Hess

    Associate Director for Partnership for Children’s Oral Health

  • Kalie Hess works at the Partnership for Children’s Oral Health, working to build a network of partners in Maine who are dedicated to eradicating dental disease in children. Dental disease is an equity issue, and she approaches this work through that perspective. Prior to working at PCOH, Kalie worked with Maine’s Federally Qualified Health Centers to implement quality improvement, policy, and systems solutions to increase access to health care for underserved people. Kalie has a background of working locally and at the state level to promote community health and wellbeing through community coalition efforts. Kalie brings to her work a commitment to addressing health equity and the underlying causes that prevent people from thriving – whether that is addressing barriers in transportation systems, improving confidence in public health efforts, or working to build new systems that better serve the people they are intended to help. Kalie received her Bachelor’s in Anthropology from the University of Maine and her Master of Public Health from the University at Albany.

    Assistant Professor of Dental Health at UMA

  • Kathryn Walker is Assistant Professor of Dental Health at the University of Maine, Augusta. In April 2020, she was appointed by Governor Janet Mills to serve a five-year term as a member of the Maine Board of Dental Practice (MBDP). The MBDP is a state regulatory agency that meets monthly with a primary focus in the protection of the public through individual dental professional regulation.


  • Hibo Omer, MPH

    Consultant for Public Health

  • Hibo Omer is a consultant for public health and diversity who educates and advocates in Maine. Hibo earned her Bachelors of Science from the University of Southern Maine, and her Master’s in Public Health from University of New England. Hibo, who was born in Ethiopia and acculturated in Somali, identifies herself as Ethio-SoMainer because she has lived most of her life in Maine. Hibo’s history has included working in Social Service with the New Mainers’ community from resettlement to connecting New Mainers to service. Additionally, she worked with the NH-ME Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Program as Public Health and Diversity Consultant. She is a co-founder of an international NGO called New Mainers Public Health–Horn of Africa, which provides public health consultation in public health disability and the program of Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) services. Hibo is a co-founder of Smart Health Consultant, a consulting firm that focuses on public health projects, diversity training, and strategic planning.


  • Carrie Woodcock

    Executive Director for Maine Parent Federation

  • Carrie Woodcock is a graduate from Saint Joseph's College in Maine with a BA in liberal arts. She spent 15 years after graduation in the filed of sales and marketing. Six years after the birth of her daughter she joined Maine Parent Federation as the Regional Family Support Coordinator for Southern Maine. Five years ago she became the Executive Director for Maine Parent Federation. She has a son who is 16 years old who is diagnosed with Dyslexia and ADHD a 14 year old daughter with Down Syndrome. She has been advocating for the needs of her children across all systems of care since 2007. Her work with Maine Parent Federation has allowed her to share my knowledge and experience with parents and professionals alike since 2013.

This Building Resiliency in Extended Events workshop series aims to help participants support resilience through individual and workforce strategies to manage stressors induced by prolonged emergencies. A recording of the didactic part of the workshops are available, together with a summary handout of the main points.

Building resiliency in an extended incident is not an identical process to building resiliency after a single disaster event or in normal non-disaster times. This training will focus on stress on organizational stressors and interventions.

  • Imani Daniel

  • Imani Daniel is a native Virgin Islander who is committed to community empowerment, sustainability, and creating a culture of preparedness in the Virgin Islands. Currently, Imani serves as the Executive Director of the St. Thomas Recovery Team (STRT). The mission of the STRT is to act as a coalition of diverse community stakeholders that are cooperatively coordinating St. Thomas’ longterm recovery response, resource management, resiliency planning, and training in response to hurricanes Irma and Maria. Imani grew up on St. Thomas and was eager to return home after studying Political Science and Neuropsychology at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. She has previously held both research and outreach positions at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, particularly regarding mental health in vulnerable and marginalized communities. Since her return home in 2015, Imani has served as the Community Engagement Specialist for the Virgin Islands Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) where she engaged other citizens with the ongoing Mare Nostrum research being conducted at UVI. After this appointment, she served as the Chief of Staff for the 32nd Legislature’s Senate Secretary, Senator Jean A. Forde. These two positions have given Imani the tools she needs to excel at advocacy, policy reform and strategic community engagement. Imani focuses on a life of service and giving Virgin Islanders the tools they need to advocate for themselves. She serves on the Board of the Family Resource Center and actively participates in All Saints Cathedral School alumni support events. She still supports VI-EPSCoR through her participation in several grants revolving around Hazard Mitigation, Community Resilience and Natural Resource Management. Recently, she has presented at the 2019 NVOAD (National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster), the 2020 Congressional Black Caucus Leadership Summit, and the 2019 and 2020 CGI (Clinton Global Initiative) conferences to promote the initiatives of the territory. She envisions a stronger and more resilient territory and hopes that her efforts and networks can help provide a more hopeful future in the Virgin Islands.


  • Mark Evces

  • Mark Evces, PhD, ABPP is an organizational consultant and clinical psychologist who, prior to launching WorkHaven LLC, served as the Assistant Director of Mental Health in the NYU School of Medicine, World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program Clinical Center of Excellence, and Clinical Instructor of Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine. In his role at the WTC health program, he provided and supervised integrative, evidence-based psychotherapy for first responders, workers, and volunteers who participated in the rescue and recovery response to the WTC attacks of September 11, 2001. He has worked across a variety of public mental health clinical, training, and research settings in Atlanta, New York, and rural Georgia. For six years, he has consulted with nonprofit organizations to help further efforts towards greater workplace health and productivity in pursuit of social justice and human rights. He also maintains a private psychotherapy practice, where he provides trauma-informed care. Dr. Evces, with Gertie Quitangon, MD, co-edited Vicarious Trauma and disaster Mental Health: Understanding Risks and Promoting Resilience, published by Routledge Press in 2015.

  • Yaminette Diaz-Linhart
    Yaminette Diaz-Linhart
  • Yaminette Diaz-Linhart, LCSW, MPH, was the recipient of the 2018 BUSSW Alumni Association’s Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Social Work. Her path has taken her from a MSW/MPH dual degree student to program director for BMC’s Center for Family Navigation in Pediatrics to her current role as a health policy research scholar in the doctoral program at Brandeis University. Yaminette was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Connecticut. She moved to western Massachusetts to attend Mount Holyoke College.
    Yaminette’s work has focused on improving child and family outcomes through mental health promotion and depression prevention for parents. Yaminette has been a member of NASW-MA since 2010 and holds a Master of Social Work and a Master of Public Health from Boston University School of Social Work and School of Public Health. She is committed to developing policy level strategies that help promote mental health for families through the life course.
    Yaminette believes that in order to move toward health equity and human sustainability, healthcare organizations will need to include people in roles such as community health workers, patient navigators, and social workers to help meet the social and health needs of patients. Her research explores how organizations manage these “nontraditional” boundary spanner roles and how work design and employee management practices may impact patient outcomes. She believes that addressing the current gap in managing these roles is crucial for employee health and wellbeing, and as a result for patients.
    Yaminette’s unique perspective straddles multiple identities, including her professional work as a public health social worker, and positions her well to think about building a Culture of Health through cross-sector collaborations in the management field.

Today’s challenges, like climate change and COVID-19, are complex and require public health professionals to lead large-scale changes that no one person or organization can solve alone. The Public Health Learning Network has developed the Learning Agenda Toolkit to help workforce specialists and other leaders develop a coordinated system of effective, efficient, and quality learning to address these challenges.
This webinar reviews the origins of the toolkit and explores its key elements, including a conceptual learning framework, rapid assessment tool, discussion guide, and learning approach planning tool, to help build a robust learning agenda and implement systems changes that improve health.

  • Christina R. Welter, DrPH, MPH

    Director, DrPH in Leadership

  • Dr. Welter is a policy practitioner, visionary leader, and practice-based researcher committed to helping organizations and their partners co-create equity-focused systems change. Among many roles, she is the Director of the DrPH in Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. Dr. Welter specializes in engaged and applied mixed method research approaches that promote collaborative learning to develop, implement, and/or evaluate multi-level policy and systems initiatives that address the structural determinants of health.
    A few of Dr. Welter’s current projects include serving as a Principal Investigator of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health funded Center for Healthy Work where she conducts an action research project to increase policy and systems strategies that addresses precarious work. She also serves as the Associate Director and Translation Investigator of the Centers for Disease Control-funded Policy, Practice and Prevention Research Center where she studies governmental public health agency readiness for strategic transformation. Dr. Welter is also currently leading the evaluation for the Cook County Department of Public Health’s Contract Tracing initiative, focused on a racial justice, community mobilization and worker-centered approach to Covid-19. Dr. Welter proudly served as one of the Deputy Incident Commanders for the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Covid-19 response Spring, 2020, helping the state to expand its strategic management and policy responses to the virus.

    Senior Program Manager, Training Specialist

  • Ms. Todd Barrett is the Senior Program Manager and Training Specialist at the Boston University School of Public Health. She manages overall operations and partnerships for the New England Public Health Training Center (NEPHTC), including training delivery and development, data analysis, and governance. Ms. Todd has co-authored posters and presentations on NEPHTC training innovations and activity for NACCHO, APHA, NNPHI, SOPHE and NACCHO Emergency Preparedness.

  • Leigh Hubbard is the Clinical Manager at Open Door Health, Rhode Island’s first Ambulatory Health clinic dedicated to providing gender affirming care to the LGBTQ community. Her prior work included surgical services, program development and management, regulatory readiness, and ambulatory care and management. She has also worked in surgical intensive care, neurosurgery, oncology, and women’s health. She finds great joy in smoothing transitions within healthcare through process improvement and helping to guide RNs and other healthcare staff members through unsure, challenging circumstances. She feels that “professional growth spurts” abound when a person or team is tested and perseveres.
    Leigh Hubbard is also the President of the American Nurses Association in Rhode Island. She chairs the government affairs committee. She is on the board of Directors of Rhode Island Action Coalition and the current medical consultant for the University of Rhode Island Childhood Development Center. She is a founding member of Mainstay RI, a small think tank dedicated to opioid overdose care redesign. She is an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Downtown Providence, where she (used to) sing soprano in the choir.

Park Rx America began as a community health initiative that aims to prevent and treat chronic disease and promote wellness by prescribing and linking patients to their local parks. Now, their searchable park database links parks to clinic Electronic Health Records, and can be used by healthcare and public health professionals to share with patients in their community.

  • Dr. Stacy Beller Stryer is a pediatrician and associate medical director for Park Rx America, where she educates healthcare providers, schools, and park agencies on benefits of nature and nature prescriptions; and works with organizations and the core team to strategize ways to move this mission forward. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and other media outlets and has published on this topic. Dr. Beller Stryer previously served as a health promotion and disease prevention coordinator in the Indian Health Service and was a pediatric subject expert for an online health website, Revolution Health. She currently works with her local school system to increase awareness and promote outdoor classrooms and green schoolyards and serves on Governor Hogan's task force for "Project Green Classrooms.” She wants others to benefit from nature as much as she has through the years.

  • Courtney L. Schultz, Ph.D. is the Research Fellow for Park Rx America. Dr. Schultz is a social science researcher with an expertise in the design and execution of behavioral research across the lifespan focusing on integrating nature exposure into a salutogenic healthcare approach. In addition to her work with Park Rx America, Dr. Schultz is the Executive Director of Health and Technology Partners LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to improving wellbeing through cooperative partnership with healthcare providers, communities, and natural resources; Adjunct Faculty at the University of Missouri; and sits on the advisory board for the SHIFT Emerging Leaders Program and Hike it Baby. Dr. Schultz holds a Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management from NC State University, along with a BS and a MS in Parks and Recreation Management from the University of Missouri.

    Executive Director of the Southern Maine Conservation Collaborative

  • Jessica Burton has been the Executive Director of the Southern Maine Conservation Collaborative (Collaborative) since its founding in 2012. The Collaborative works as a network of land and water conservation organizations in Southern Maine and seeks to build strategic partnerships to expand conservation's reach for greater relevance and healthier communities. Indigenous communities, people who identify as American Indian and Alaska Native, have long faced systemic oppression in this country which is reflected in poor health outcomes. For example, indigenous communities have a life expectancy that is 5.5 years shorter than the national average. Learn about how Connecticut has treated indigenous communities in the past, how these injustices impact policy today and how you can engage this population in health planning. Michele serves as Chair of the Health Care Advisory Board of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and is a member of The Arc Eastern Connecticut Board of Directors. Michele received her B.A in Psychology and American Studies from Columbia University and her M.S. in Organizational Leadership from Quinnipiac University. She resides on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation with her family.
